QUESTION #5555:A follow up to question 5528 about the period dramedy. The show is designed to be an hour long for a standard episode. We are now revising the pilot script and are wondering if the two hour pilot is the expected standard or if your are better off doing a jam packed 1 hour pilot? Does it need to be even hour blocks, is 90 minutes ok? Suggestions?
ANSWER: A one-hour pilot script is better. However, every once in a while a network will consider doing a "backdoor pilot," which is a 2-hour original movie that is designed to spinoff into a one-hour weekly series. The movie will be divided into the 7-Act Structure, peaking at the end of each act with "cliffhanger" endings before going to commercial break.
