FAQ

LITERARY MATERIAL SUBMISSION FAQ’S

1. What’s the difference between the two ways of submitting material?

The narrow submission gets seen only by us and the companies we have deals with. It never gets posted to our website. The wide submission also gets seen first by us (Hollywoodlitsales.com, Inc) and the companies we have a deal with, but, if it is rejected, we post it to the website for other producers and agents to look it.

2. How do I know my material won’t be ripped off?

If you use the narrow submission option, there is no chance of this happening. The two companies we're aligned with our major players. It’s cheaper for them to write you a check than to get into a legal battle. If you submit your logline by using the wide submission option and we post it to the website, we can’t guarantee anything. That’s because anyone can see it if they visit the website. Most companies in the industry are honorable though and you needn't worry. But if you are still worried, then don’t submit it. Perhaps an agent or producer will come knocking at your door looking for material. Let us know if this happens. It would be a first.

3. Can I include my website’s URL?

Yes. As long as it accompanies at least a one sentence logline that explains your story. If your submission doesn’t tell us anything about your story, it will not be considered.

4. Should I register my material first?

That's always a good idea. We recommend Protectrite. It's the equivalent to the Writers Guild but cheaper and they offer longer terms and online registration.

5. Should I include my phone number in the "additional info" box?

It's up to you but we don't recommend it. Remember, this is an OPEN service. We can't attest to the validity of the person or company who contacts you other than us. Until you know more about them, it's best they know your e-mail address only. But it's your call.

6. What happens once I submit my material?

It is evaluated and if there is further interest, a treatment or your literary material will be requested, to be sent to us by e-mail or snail mail. If there isn't further interest from us, we will post it to the website if you submitted by using the wide option.

7. Does my contact info appear on the website for all to see?

No. This information is for our records only. We will never sell or rent it. If a producer or agents sees your logline and wants to contact you, they fill out a form and sent it through our website. Your e-mail address is not visible to them.

8. Can I update my submission?

You can always update your e-mail address and/or contest wins to your listing.

9. Will I be notified along the way what is happening to my material?

Yes. Our system, allows for an automatic e-mail to be sent to you as your logline, treatment, screenplay or other literary material is evaluated.

10. What if I make a mistake and want to change or delete the submission?

After you click the first "submit" button on the form, you will be given a chance to fix mistakes before the final submission. Once you click on the second "submit" button and it goes into our system you will NOT be able to make changes or delete an entry. Sorry. This is a FREE service. We don't have a staff to make changes and since we screen all listings, we don't want you to make changes at will to the logline.

11. Once I submit using one method, can I submit later on using another method?

Not for the same listing. For example, let's say you are submitting loglines for three screenplays. Screenplay #1 and screenplay #2 get submitted by the wide submission option. Screenplay #3 gets submitted by using the narrow option. You decide a few days later that screenplay #3 should've been submitted using the wide option and screenplays #1 and #2 should've been submitted by the narrow option. Sorry. It's too late. Once the submission has been finalized, you can't change your mind. And you also can't submit one story using both options.

12. If I submit using the wide submission process, and it goes into the database for any producer to see, how long will it remain there?

Indefinitely. Or at least until we decide to take this marketplace database off our website. Whichever comes first. If you get an option or sale though, let us know so we can spread the word.

13. Can I still see my submission once it goes to the website? Or will it be password protected?

Yes, you will still be able to view your submission once we send it to the website. No password is necessary.

14. How long will it take to evaluate my logline before you either want to see more or reject it?

Hard to answer. Could be days or weeks. Depends on the number of other submissions at that time.

15. If you ask for a screenplay how long will that take before I hear from you?

Usually three to six weeks. But please don’t write us if it’s taking longer. We’ll get to it and let you know. Promise.

16. I submitted a logline with your wide submission method and it's been a few weeks. I don't see it in the database and I haven't heard from you. What's happening?

Either we're busy or you didn't follow our rules so we disgarded the entry. Remember, we reserve the right not to put a listing into the database and display it on our website. But most likely we were busy. Very few entries haven't made it to the website that were supposed to.

17. Does this process really work?

Yes. Sony-based Escape Artists (formerly known as Black & Blu Ent.) is developing several projects it found through the site. Other producers and agents visit us all the time looking for material. There have been deals made. We were the first website to offer this FREE service and we are the best at it. The industry is well aware of the companies we’re aligned with and now they are well aware of us.
