"BOOK REVIEW: WRITING DRAMA - a comprehensive guide for playwrights and scriptwriters"
Author: Yves Lavandier
Book Review by Matthew Terry
Published by: le clown & l'enfant
ISBN: 2-910606-04-X

I'm always a bit cautious when a book I receive refers to itself as "comprehensive" or "complete" - usually the obvious becomes true and there are large gaps of content or concepts not defined or explored. For this book, though, comprehensive is an apt description. It is EXTREMELY comprehensive from every idea, every concept, every thought. I'm hard-pressed to find any flaw or any discrepancy in this book whatsoever.

Part comprehensive text-book, part reference book, Mr. Lavandier does an excellent job exploring the basic concepts of script writing.

What is particularly good about this book (all 600 pages of it) is that it brings to mind all the basics of every good story structure: Conflict, protagonist, obstacles, structure, etc. In this day and age of fancy books with big titles and themes of all sorts, this book brings the writer and reader back into the core basics of story. And, frankly, this is a good place to be.

Using hundreds of films as examples, Mr. Lavandier breaks down and explores every possible topic when it comes to writing drama, and he explores them in great detail - pulling the reader in and helping the reader grow. To touch on every aspect, would mean this review would go on for pages.

Simply put: buy this amazing book. Either read it through or keep it handy as a reference book. You'll be accessing it and enjoying it again and again.
